June 9-30, 2002: ROOF conducted its 3rd summer camp for children from the orphanage in the village of Belskoye Ustye. 120 children from Pskov and the Pskov oblast live at the orphanage. They are orphans and children with various physical and psychological disabilities. The director of the camp was Yulia Kurchanova. Head counselor - Lena Drozdova. Caretaker - Dima Kurchanov. Invited specialist - psychologist / art therapist Galina Lebedeva.
12 volunteers participated in the summer educational programme: six students from universities in Moscow and Pskov and six students from Oxford.
The camp's schedule was approved by the administration of the orphanage and by the bureau of Social Defence of the city of Porkhov.
The programme's goal was to set in motion a fun and educational process of learning during the summer, which social workers could continue throughout the school year in group work.
Tasks. Mastering developmental methodologies jointly with social workers. Conducting interesting and entertaining lessons on particular methodologies that promote improvement in memory and attention span, develop imagination, and are of a social character.
The twelve counsellors were divided into pairs with each pair working with a particular group for the camp's entire duration.
Several groups were organized to develop the children's creativity:
- Bead weaving
- Knitting
- Nature studies
- Puppet theatre
- Drawing
- Collage
- Sculpture with clay
- Sports class
Summer Camp 2002 turned out to be the most successful of all those held to date in conducted in that we enjoyed the active cooperation of the administration of the orphanage. We had active cooperation from the administration of the orphanage (concrete issues were addressed, and tasks for the upcoming school year were set out). The administration of the orphanage fulfilled its mission to carry out developmental work with children.
In addition to their primary work, the counsellors worked for two days gathering and preparing natural materials (various grasses and reeds) which supplied the basket-making workshop with enough material for an entire academic year.
We had a wonderfully active and cohesive team of counsellors.
